I totally agree with this ... and looking at her photos, it's obvious to me that she was so happy with finishing (as we all are!) and also had worked hard for it. And, somewhat relatedly, I was really impressed with Lance's time! I think he learned his lesson from last year :)

Race courses are shut down, a mile or an aid station at a time,
BY CLOCK time.
That is a major reason for walkers and runner/walkers to start near the front.
They may be able to make.. say 15 minute miles... but they can't make up for a 10 or 15 minute late start in the first few miles... so they risk getting bused.
When in reality, if allowed to do the whole race, they could make the chip time limit.
A ten minute late start can be pretty scary.

I completely agree. I just realized where my bias is from though. If there are those who are crazy enough and willing to walk a marathon want to walk a marathon than more power to them. I applaud their accomplishment and it is in no way 'less important' than my own marathon run. I just wish that race organizers would realize that the marathon began as a running race and therefore those who are at the back of the pack whether they be walkers or not should not be unfairly encumbering those at the front. My bias is due to marathons like Seattle, where walkers and 1/2 marathon racers are allowed to start before the marathon on the same course. This means that marathoners, even those at the very front, are constantly having to swerve around walkers or slower half-marathoners. Although equitable sharing of race water/gels is the goal for any race I have to admit I am biased in favor of those in the front. If you are at the front of a race you shouldn't have to worry at all about not getting water or gels at an aid station. You really shouldn't have to worry at the rear either, but it is a riskier place to be.

Great post.

The thing about slower runners is that they have SO much endurance, which I really admire. After all, they're running for a lot longer than other runners.

And Danielle--from what little bit I know, I don't think Katie Holmes asked the media to cover her running the marathon. In fact, the photo I saw showed her in a baseball cap and not drawing any attention to herself. I would imagine she enjoyed being a little lost in the crowd for once.

I don't know where I've been but I didn't know that Katie Holmes ran until I read your blog.
I couldn't agree with you more. I love to run, but I admit I embarrassed to tell people outside the running community how slow I am. I work with girls who easily run marathons in under 4 hours. To them running 10 minute miles in super slow and I run slower than that often. '
So, here here to all the runners, slow, fast, fat, young, old, etc. We all belong and just thank god people are actually moving rather than shoving their faces with food while sitting on the couch.

There have been a few things really itching in the back of my brain lately and if I were to try and write them out it was goinig to be three very different posts or one very mismashed post and then you sum it all up with this

" A community, any community, is made up of all different kinds of people. And the more it grows, the more you’re going to see a broad spectrum of abilities."

Thank you.

I'm with you. Critiquing doesn't do any good in general.

I can't believe she could get through one in such a short amount of training time. It'll take me forever to work up to that point. Good for her!
