A week, 20 miles, and four closet doors later

by LesleyG on April 5, 2009

I’m sitting down to type this at a laptop thats, no exaggeration, losing it’s top.  And that’s just the physical problems.  In spite of my diligence to use external hard drives and not save each and every photo I take, I’ve somehow also almost kicked this hard drive’s ass as well.  Ah, remember the days when I could replace my computer’s cracked LCD screen and think I was untouchable?  Those were the days.

So, a new computer is now mine and it’s shiny and fast and small.  What are year-end bonuses for, I guess. But the reason I drag down this road is because the last week, though without blogging, has been pretty full.  I ripped out some closet doors that I hate.  Litterally. Ripped them out.  And I’m going to replace them with curtains, or something equally economical. That’ll work, right?  And then I found some new yard sale art work, which will be on my wall as soon as I can find my nails. I have a hammer, just no nails. They’re here somewhere, I swear.  A lot of things about me fall into that “single girl” category, but this isn’t it. I swear I have nails… somewhere.

This past Saturday, I also found a way to get myself through 20 miles.  It was my last long training run before the marathon, and Lord help me, I had to do the whole thing on the treadmill.  I really didn’t want it to go that way, but snow and 40 m.p.h. winds is just something I cannot hang with.  There are people that can, people say that it makes you stronger, I am not one of them.  So I downloaded a couple podcasts, a couple new CD’s, and the NPR app for my iPhone and hit the treadmill at 8:00 a.m.  Thanks to the ever-lasting, slow drag of interval running, I finished four hours later.  Sheesh, this is going to be a slow marathon.  But also? I felt no pain! None.  That is going to make it all worth it, I think. The fact that I made it through and that I can walk today says a lot for those ridiculously slow intervals.

So the last week has been productive, of sorts. I’ve found, though, that the more I take my mind off my stuff, and myself, the better everything is.  The more I work to improve the things I can, or at the very least change them, the better I feel.  Didn’t you all say something about that?  I seem to remember a lot of comments and emails about that.  And, of course, it’s right. We get there on our own, eventually.  It  helps to have people tell you, yes, and it also helps to rip out some closet doors.  Really, do it. And grunt while you do.

Good for you! I can’t believe you spent four hours on a treadmill. I can’t spend four minutes on one – honest to goodness, they give me motion sickness! That’s pretty lame, huh? Anyway, you got it together and you did it! You are going to do great at your marathon. And, I think curtains instead of doors will be cool.

Twenty miles?! Excellent! I say that as someone who was not waiting in line behind you at the gym for a treadmill.

Remodeling or deep cleaning always helps when I am in that state. Good for you!

Four hours on a treadmill? Do you realise what a lazy schlub that information makes me feel like?

Makes me want to go rip out some closet doors!

Yep, a lot of things about me also fall under the single girl category, but I also have nails! ; )

Yay for your 20 miles, That’s awesome. And, I agree there are other ways of making oneself stronger that don’t include freezing to death.

You’re doing great! Ripped doors and all ; )
