My Kryptonite

by LesleyG on November 30, 2009

Wow, NaBloPoMo has been fun. Well, not really. But it’s been something new to do and for that, go me! In the beginning I’d warned about photo-only posts, and that was not a cop out but was only because I know myself so well that I was certain there’d be a time when I would not have anything to say. So that time also coincided with stuffing and green bean casserole. So what?

Because I am still unemployed (three weeks going on what feels like could be forever) I am finding myself with much more time. This is not to say that I’ve had nothing to do, because exactly the opposite is true. I was worried that after the first week, when I gave myself a To-Do list that I’d get through it and not have enough to do, but that couldn’t be more wrong. Granted, I spend about 25% more time (yes, I did the math) on social networking sites, but still that leaves about 8 hours more per day that one would think I had “free.” That is not the case.  Turns out life is like seeping water (like in the pool, remember?) and finds its way into every possible space it can.

I have all kinds of things to do, and even more on the list than ever before. How does this happen?

One of the things that I’ve been able to do is take more pictures. Of things, of places, of people. I know, this doesn’t seem like a place where I’m lacking as it is, but let me tell you, there are hard drives to fill, people! And I am doing just that.

Today I had a fun little shoot with my nephew, sister, and brother-in-law.  Such good sports, those three. Actually, it’s just my brother-in-law that’s a good sport. The other two are hams. I was a little worried about my nephew as he’s at the age wherein every event, should it have a title, would be preceded with WWF. It’s all aggression and action and movement and screaming ALL THE TIME. He is just that kind of kid. I hear it stops at 5 or 6 though. Or is it 50?

He’s manageable, to an extent, but he’s nowhere near the cute little boy in the bow-tie that he was a couple years ago.

Oh, be still my heart. Can you even handle that? It is unfair how fast these kids grow.
But these days, he’s not at all interested in sitting still and looking adorable.  Instead, now he moves a million miles a minute, non-stop, and wants to show you his muscles.

I’m pretty sure he’s saying “Look, my aunt went to the Caribbean and all I got was this shirt with little flowers on it. BUT, DUDE, I STILL HAVE HUGE MUSCLES.”

Somehow, he is still unbearably charming. I call him my Kryptonite. I could be busy, half-asleep, or half-dead, and if he wants to play I cannot resist it. I find my busy, half-asleep, half-dead self playing pirate ship, or space ship, or having a dance party. The kid actually says “Auntie Lelley, let’s dance it out!”  How am I supposed to resist that?

Even with those muscles, he is so charming.

And yeah, he’s a little strange, wants to wrestle everything (Me? Check. Dog? Check. Christmas tree? Check. Check. Check), and has only one volume: LOUD, but I must forgive him. He is my Kryptonite.
Besides, none of it is really his fault. And it’s not my fault, either.  It’s his parents.
His weird, weird parents.
And him? He’s just standing back, and taking it all in.
And, of course, waiting for the precise right time to strike. Because that is what Kryptonite does.

I think I somehow missed the unemployment post in my pregnancy haze. That stinks but I’m sure you will find something fabulous to do. Tom my husband went through that and we ended up in Nashville and I couldn’t be happier. If you need anything let me know.

Love the photos of your nephew – he is too cute for words.

Mega congrats on the NaBloPoMo wrap-up! Re the employment picture, as far as I am concerned, any situation that allows you to take more pictures is fine by me.

And your nephew will always be adorable.
