Lurkers with a cause?

by LesleyG on January 15, 2010

So I am never, ever on top of the latest goings on Internet-wise, which is totally why I missed de-lurking day yesterday, but in the last week the Internet, Social Networking, and Blogging/Bloggers have AMAZED me in more ways than one, for more causes than one. The time, energy, and spirit people will put into doing something good is nothing short of brilliant.

It’s for that reason that I can’t help but wonder who else is out there that I don’t know.Who else is contributing in ways I may never otherwise see?

Last night I met a friend for happy hour, something that has rarely happened since I left my office job. It occured to me about one margarita in that the place was packed and that we should try to collect money to donate to relief efforts in Haiti. So, I went around with a bucket and asked people for donations, threatening to sing “Pants on the Ground” if people didn’t give. It worked beautifully, and I ended up with $240 in my bucket in about 30 minutes.  Who knew I could be so forward? I mean, besides everyone.

So today I’m asking for two things if you visit this website: 1) Delurk! Come on, please?  And 2) Tell me which cause you think my $240 bar collection should go to for Haitian relief efforts.

That is all.  Thank you. THANK YOU!

Cool idea – I’m glad people contributed! I heard on CNN this morning that right now, the best organizations to donate to are UNICEF, Red Cross, or any of the large ones that have the ability to quickly turn the $$ into aid. The smaller orgs will be needing the money later on once the crisis is handled by the big guys.

You did well! The Red Cross would be my suggestion. Thanks for thaking the time and making the effort.

You are so awesome! Wow – and I love that people donated to you. Makes me happy that we live in this world.

The Red Cross has an International Response Fund going straight to Haiti. That’s where I sent my money.

I’m in on the Red Cross cause! GREAT JOB!!! :)

I have to admit that I am a little surprised that people were so trusting that you were legitimately collecting money to send to Haiti. Perhaps it’s just because the scam artists have already started around here, perhaps it is your trustworthy face, or perhaps they were all drunk.

Regardless, well done you!

Red Cross is a good one, I agree.

Oh, dang it. Everyone already said Red Cross. It’s a dependable, trustable (ummm…I’m allowed to make up words, aren’t I?) agency!

This is awesome, what a great idea! Good work! I agree with everyone else, the Red Cross is a safe bet. Or Doctors Without Borders.

It really is amazing the power of a disaster and how generous people can be, even if they don’t have much themselves. And that is just awesome you were able to do that. I’d never have the guts! Maybe I should sell my Jello shots tomorrow tailgating to earn money for Haiti…Red Cross is good, but I’d go for anything you can find that is going directly to the people…I always am bothered by charities with high paid higher ups…how much of he money really hits the charity?

Amazing what people are capable of when given the opportunity to do the right thing. We should probably extend invitations like that more frequently.

Personally, I’d pay to hear you sing Pants on the Ground.
